1961-1962 E. E Bass 8th grade spelling bee: lost to 1st place boys Wayne Hairston ("Fahrenheit"), but beat out Richard Alton "Dickie" Etheridge (3rd place boys; "vacuum") for 2nd place boys; it was the only time in my life I ever beat salutatorian (or was it valedictorian?) Dickie Etheridge at anything!
