TUPELO - Walter Edwin "Butch" Thompson Jr., 60, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at his home in Lee County. He was born April 11, 1947, in Greenville to the late Walter Edwin Thompson Sr. and Virginia Pyron Thompson. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with courage and valor during the Vietnam War. He was shot, disabled and later became a 100 percent disabled veteran. He was awarded several medals, including two Purple Hearts.

During his working career, he sold Rain Soft Water Treatment Systems. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, the Disabled American Veterans and the Purple Heart Association. He was active much of the time, doing yard work, watching his sons play baseball or football, or helping his sons understand life.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Hicks officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Lindsey Cemetery in Dennis. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Sarah Sartain Thompson, whom he married June 17, 1983; three sons, Patrick Willis Thompson and Alex Parker Thompson, both of Tupelo, and Michael Brent Thompson of Shreveport, La.; one brother, Ronnie Thompson of Memphis; two grandchildren, Zara and Winston Thompson; his mother-in-law, Hester Sartain of Traceway Manor.

Pallbearers will be Ben Ferguson, Patrick Ferguson, Austin Parmer, Richard Hill and Kerry Lynch.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
