Barbara Woods (Ballard)

Because we were normally assigned seats in class in alphabetical order, Tommy and I were usually seated right next to each other. I remember Tommy being very quiet and shy but always friendly and so nice and polite. Growing up Tommy was a member of Second Baptist Church when it was located down on South Theobald and we saw each other there most Sundays. Tommy and my brother Luther (Class of 64) and Terry Reynolds (Class of 66, now deceased) were good friends. Tommy, Luther and Terry loved to hunt and fish together. They also liked to go out "running beagles at night and training them to hunt rabbits". Luther said they would go "way out in the woods" (where Walmart is now located) build a campfire and let the dogs run. I guess Tommy's love of the outdoors always stayed with him because he later became a park ranger. Tommy married and had one child but he died suddenly when that child was only weeks old. It was just before our 10 year class reunion so I guess he was about 28 when he died. I always assumed he had a heart attack but according to Robert Wylie it was a ruptured aortic anuerysm. I've always wished I had kept up with his wife and family just to know how and who they are. We miss you Tommy.

Jerome Vaughan

Hi, I'm Jerome Vaughan (with two 'a's!), Tommy's youngest brother.  I stumbled on this site and thought I'd clarify some of the info above, and offer a little more about him.  Tommy was 14 years older than me, and, since our Dad died when I was only 6 months old, he was like a father to me.  He always took time away from college, girls, and work to take me hunting, fishing, and camping.  Tommy was the kindest, most thoughtful person I have ever known.  He worked hard and played hard.  I loved him dearly and was crushed when he died at the young age of 34.

After college, he was not a park ranger, but rather the MS Forestry Commission's County Forester for Alcorn (and for a while Tishomingo also) Counties.  I think he must have been friendly with every landowner in the two counties, so we always had good places to hunt, fish, and ride motorcycles in the woods.  I spent a week or two with him every summer and over every Christmas break.

His wife is still in Corinth.  She remarried and has lost her second husband also, but is doing well and enjoying their grandchildren.  Tommy actually had two children, both girls.  The elder is married, still in Corinth, and has a Ph.D. in physical therapy and three children.  The younger is unmarried and currently finishing up law school.

Thought some of you might be interested.  Cool site, by the way!

Jerome

Hi Jerome,

I must say, it is indeed a pleasure to hear from you and to have you add your own knowledge and feelings about one our favorite old classmates. I don't suppose there are many, if any, who didn't know and love your brother. Tommy was a unique individual focused on his own ambition to be in his element, "nature". Those who knew him best knew he would always be invloved with nature to some degree. So glad he succeeded in his quest. I just wish he was still here with us.

Your remarks help to bring us closer to the closure we all need. He will always be with us, Jerome, and I hope you will invite others in the family to stop by and leave their comments as well. It's a special way to keep Tommy with us and to know how his legacy continues to live on...

Please give his wife, his girls and the rest of your family our warmest, heartfelt sympathy.

Thanks,

Robert Wylie
Class of '65

P. S. Jerome, someone posted a memorial for Tommy's gravesite a few years ago:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=vau&GSiman=1&GScid=59352&GRid=73240178&

and of course they have Vaughan spelled with only one "a"....
