Barbara Woods (Ballard)

Shirley called to invite me over for tea made with fresh mint from her garden. As we relaxed on her porch drinking mint tea a breeze came up, then a gentle rain began to fall. The aroma of fresh mint wafted across the porch, a gentle reminder of how good life was.

That was several years ago. I remember another time Shirley called me. "Barbara, I may have MS. Will you pray for me?" Life was not so good for Shirley after that. Multiple sclerosis took its toll fast and hard. Shirley became totally disabled, house bound, and bed ridden prior to being placed in a nursing home with a feeding tube (by then she was unable to swallow or do anything for herself at all). I saw Joe love and care for her as you would a small child. She died in 2006, about 10 years after diagnosis due to complications with pneumonia. Shirley was a beautiful, beautiful person, but more importantly she had a beautiful heart. I still miss her and think of her often, but I especially remember her every time I smell fresh mint.
