..I can see my age much clearer.

I try eating things that are right

..But the image is still such a sight.

As old age sneaks up and gets nearer

..I think I'll go break that old mirror.

The Green Thing

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized to her and explained, "We didn't have the "green thing" back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did't care enough to save our environment."

He was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.

We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then?

It is sad, Nancy, but dying is a part of living. They may be gone, but we can keep them with us by sharing our memories of them. I wrote a note on Donnie Dunlap's page as if he were still with us. He was a very good friend, he died so young, and I never dreamed I would never see him again. I guess my note to him was my way of saying to his spirit, "Hey Donnie. You're still here with me, buddy, right here in my heart". I guess in essence we can say, his "memory" lives on....

So, as a good friend of mine I say to you, dear: Be glad, not sad, that you knew them when....

I swear, every time I log in and see the "In Memory" number go up my stomach drops. I can hardly stand the thought of losing one of our class members. I still remember them young and full of life. So very sad.

LIFE EXPLAINED...

The boat docked in a tiny Mexican fishing village.

A tourist complimented the local fishermen on the quality of their fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

"Not very long." they answered in unison.

"Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?"

The fishermen explained that their small catches were sufficient to meet their needs and those of their families.

"But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

"We sleep late, fish a little, play with our children, and take siestas with our wives. In the evenings, we go into the village to see our friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. On Sundays we go to church.

We have a full life and..."

The tourist interrupted,

"I have an MBA from Harvard, and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat."

"And after that?" They asked.

"With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City !

From there you can direct your huge new enterprise."

"How long would that take?"

"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years." replied the tourist.

"And after that?"

"Afterwards? Well my friend, that's when it gets really interesting, " answered the tourist, laughingly. "When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!"

"Millions? Really? And after that?" asked the fishermen.

"After that? Well, after that, you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends."

And the moral of this story is:

Know where you're going in life...

You may already be there....

While we all have memories of each other, let us not forget all those great teachers we had at GHS, many of whom had an everlasting impact on our lives.

My all time favorite was Miss Margie Fike. She was so pleasant and fun to be around. She always had something to say to you to help brighten your day. She taught me to "harmonize" with others. Another teacher who made a real impact on my life was Mrs. Ida Wilkerson. She also taught me to harmonize with others. If you think about it, they both had the same basic focus for life in general for us. When we all work together in unison, only then can we produce the sweet sound of success.

Thanks to all the wonderful teachers we had for they helped produce: Presidents, VPs, owners, teachers, professors, doctors, lawyers, judges, bankers, brokers, engineers, directors, authors, journalist, publishers, scientist, ministers, and that's only a brief list of those who have joined us here thus far. I can't wait to see what everybody else has been doing all these many years.

Never having the opportunity to attend any of our reunions, I can't begin to tell you all what it means to me to see you here and catch a glimpse of your lives and your families. Please share with me as I have missed you all very, very much.
